“Fashion is Art Exhibition: Showcasing Gavin Benjamin & Everett Johnson”

Brandt-Roberts Galleries (BRG) – Exhibition Press Release | May 7–29, 2022

Brandt Gallery presented a collaborative installation between East St. Louis designer Everett Johnson and Pittsburgh-based artist Gavin Benjamin in an exhibition titled, “Fashion is Art.” Curated in partnership with the Columbus Fashion Alliance, the show explored the intersections of fashion, art, and activism. Everett’s “Baggage Collection,”a series of leather handbags crafted in response to the murder of George Floyd, was featured in a striking visual dialogue with Benjamin’s still-life photography. Drawing from themes of legacy, personal history, and cultural reflection, both artists honored their family lineages while responding to social justice issues through their respective mediums. This powerful exhibition reinforced the idea that, as Nina Simone once said, “An artist’s duty is to reflect the times.”
